Portland Police Bureau criminalist killed in Vancouver crash

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A Portland police officer was killed Sunday evening when the vehicle he was driving hit a dump truck in Vancouver, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Officer returns to duty after fatal shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man last month returned to duty on Wednesday.

Officer Ron Frashour was cleared to go back to work after a Multnomah County grand jury found his use of deadly force fell within guidelines.

But Frashour will be working for a neighborhood response team, and not taking emergency calls.

Frashour said he shot 25-year-old Aaron Campbell because he believed Campbell was reaching for a weapon and trying to get into position to use it.

Campbell was shot in the back when he emerged from his girlfriend's apartment following calls to 911 from her family that Campbell was suicidal and wanted police to kill him.

Pit bull bites woman picking up her kid at school

A mother tries to rescue her dog and two children as a pit bull attacks near a Portland school. KATU's Adam Ghassemi has the story.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A mother was bitten by a pit bull while picking her child up from school Tuesday afternoon outside Lincoln Park Elementary.

Alina Simril said the pit bull went after her dog before biting her, leaving a few teeth marks. She had her 5-year-old daughter with her at the time and was pushing her 10-month-old son in a stroller while on her way to pick up her 8-year-old daughter at the school.

"The pit bull just saw my dog Jazzy and just attacked her," Simril said. "I kept trying to pull her back but the pit bull wasn't on a leash so it just kept attacking my dog."

The dog then turned and bit Simril's right hand.

"I didn't even know I was bleeding," she said.

Other parents rushed to the woman and then ran into the school to keep kids from heading outside.

According to Animal Control, the owner has two dogs that are unlicensed and were roaming free. The owner was ticketed and the dog is on a 10-day quarantine at home.

Simril's fiance, Josh Miller, said their dog had a wound that started oozing on Wednesday and they were planning on taking her to the vet.

Evidence not presented to support cop indictment, jury decides

Photo caption: The late Aaron Marcell Campbell watches over the hospital bed of his late brother Timothy Douglass in this family photo.

PORTLAND, Ore. - A grand jury has decided that the Portland police officer who shot and killed a man during a standoff in Northeast Portland last month did not break any laws.

Officer Ronald Frashour shot Aaron Campbell once during a standoff outside the man's apartment at Northeast 128th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.

Police say Campbell stopped following instructions and began to run away. It turned out Campbell was unarmed.

Even though the jurors decided the officer was not at fault, the Oregonian is reporting that jurors will draft a letter to the police department addressing what it calls some troublesome issues related to the incident.

The Albina Ministerial Alliance is planning a protest at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11 at the downtown Portland Justice Center on Southwest 3rd Avenue.
